Woody Guthrie Goes to Palestine
Thursday, 29th September 2016, 6:30pm
Following the highly successful Woody Guthrie Meets John Steinbeck at The St Anne’s Community Arts Centre in Barnstaple, North Devon, Seán Nicholson and Dave Clinch have returned with a new performance over 90 minutes entitled Woody Guthrie Goes to Palestine.
They will be singing Woody Guthrie songs, some such as This Land is Your Land, adapted in a Palestinian context. There are also some self-penned songs. Extracts from diaries kept by Dave Clinch on the visits he has made to occupied Palestine, most recently in November 2015 will also feature along with accompanying images from those visits.
The performance aims to raise money towards the £3000 needed for the rebulding of the recently demolished Community Centre at Khirbet Umm Al Khair in the South Hebron Hills by bringing a two part 90 minute performance to a P21 Gallery audience. Also hope to raise awareness of the occupation of Palestine through song and extracts from an eyewitness diary kept by Dave Clinch on his visits since 2008.
Seán Nicholson and Dave Clinch are both schoolteachers, now retired, who have been friends for many years. They are originally from the Republic of Ireland and see many parallels with the occupation of Palestine by the zionist state of Israel and England’s occupation of Ireland, its first colony.
Back in 2012 when Dave was visiting Palestine and helping with the Abuaisheh family olive harvest in the Tel Rumeida district of Al Khalil (Hebron) the idea for a song for Palestine came about whilst talking to and singing with other ‘Internationals’. The great American folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote This Land is Your Land during the period of The Great Depression of the 1930s to acknowledge and inspire ordinary people to fight for equality and justice. Dave thought it was a perfect song for Palestine, with some alterations! From here the 90 minute show Woody Guthrie Goes to Palestine evolved.
Seán is known as a fine interpreter of Woody Guthrie’s songs, accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica. Dave sings, plays the uilleann pipes, low D whistle, bodhrán and guitar. They have performed together many times over the years.
Woody Guthrie Goes to Palestine is a tribute to the courage, resistance and resilience (sumud) of Palestinians in occupied Palestine, Palestinian Refugees (inside and outside of their country), Arab Israelis, who are treated as second class citizens and Palestinian exiles throughout the world.
