GALLERY TALK AND MUSIC PERFORMANCE
Heart/Homeless
Friday 5th April 2019 | 18:30 - 21:00
Join us for an exciting evening of discussion featuring “Heart/Homeless” curator, Dagmar Painter, along with a special musical performance by Syrian oud player Rihab Azar.
Painter will explore the works of “Heart/Homeless” Palestinian American visual artist Manal Deeb discussing Deeb’s exploration of the psyche of the Arab female dispossessed from her home. Ms. Painter will lead a walk and talk through the gallery space, discussing technique and touchstones in Deeb’s work, with emphasis on Deeb’s use of her own body in creating a universal female avatar expressive of both despair and hope.
Dagmar Painter is an independent curator with previous exhibitions in Europe and the Middle East. Painter is also a curator at the Gallery Al-Quds in Washington D.C., establishing the space as the premier full time exposition space of Arab and Arab American art on the East Coast.
Rihab Azar was born in Homs, Syria. Azar has been recognized by Arts Council England as a musician of “Exceptional Promise”, toured with the London Sinfonietta in this past autumn 2018, and is one of the musicians selected for the newly formed “Third Orchestra”.
