Saturday, 23rd February 2019 | 12:00 - 16:00

An artistic workshop aimed at children and young people to help develop their creative expression through poetry and embroidery.

During the workshop, you will be taught how to hand embroider your very own version of Ayaat Hussain’s Iraq embroidery designs. Using colours of your choice, you will create your embroidery art and learn 6 stitching techniques to complete your hoop art and learn how to finish and frame your piece. Practical help will be given by demonstrating the many ways in which this can be achieved using the most simple of hand embroidery techniques. No knowledge of particular and precise embroidery techniques are needed.

You will also learn ways to express yourself through poetry by Ilaf Moslawy who will be guiding a workshop on how to talk about cultural trauma instead`of silencing these feelings.

Ayaat Hussain is a Design Technology Technician & Textiles Teacher at a school in Leeds. Ayaat is also a textiles artist showing work at the exhibition. She will be leading a drop-in embroidery workshop.

Ilaf Moslawy is an Iraqi poet who expresses herself through spoken-word. Ilaf performed her piece ‘I am BP’ at the launch of the exhibition, and at the creative takeover. She will be leading a drop-in poetry workshop.

Both sessions are drop-in, so feel free to pop in, enjoy a cup of tea and learn some new skills.
