Each Child a Light is a collaborative quilt project.
Multiple acts of solidarity, of bearing witness, of mourning.
A collective promise never to forget the children of Gaza murdered in Israel’s genocide.

P21 Gallery is pleased to present Each Child a Light, a UK wide and international community-based initiative which brings together hundreds of people: artists, crafters, activists, community groups, children and students of all ages, backgrounds and levels of experience, to create unique squares for the quilt, each one dedicated to an individual child.

Square by square, visitors will experience the quilt as it builds an essential record, a lasting memorial to so many young lives ended in violence. It names the murdered children and honours those who are lost or, as yet, un-named. It makes visible the scale of the atrocity, providing space to mourn, to mark and to remember,

Quilts are treasured decorative textiles, with a long-standing connection to memory, protest and comfort. They continue to capture personal, family and community histories, stories otherwise untold, voices silenced by mainstream narratives or obliterated by violence. Each Child a Light has taken inspiration from, amongst others, the coded quilts of the Underground Railroad; The AIDS Memorial Quilt; the Arpilleras of memory and resistance in Chile and the Grenfell Memorial Quilt.

During the exhibition you are invited to create your own squares. No previous experience is needed. As they are completed, squares will be assembled to form new quilt panels and your contributions will add to this growing testament to the lives of Gaza’s children.

NOTE: To be able to fund our vibrant exhibitions and events, we need to charge a modest £5 ticket price to help cover part of the gallery running costs and overheads.
